Austrian Schwank: Karin Bergmann becomes boss in Salzburg

The Salzburg Festival has a new artistic director: On April 7th, the festival’s board of trustees announced that it had “unanimously decided to appoint Karin Bergmann as interim artistic director with immediate effect”. The sober message initially seems like a nonsense that not even Johann Nestroy could have thought up. As a reminder: On March 26th, the board of trustees, consisting of representatives from politics and tourism, announced that they were separating from director Markus Hinterhäuser “by mutual agreement” and with immediate effect. The reasons for this remained largely obscure; Hinterhäuser had apparently repeatedly not behaved in accordance with the so-called good conduct clause in his contract. Apart from anonymous accusations about his behavior, one point was somewhat tangible: the board of trustees seemed snubbed that Hinterhäuser wanted to install a new acting director bypassing the board of trustees, which was his right, as the board of trustees later admitted.
