Senate and CCAA award Curro Vázquez with the National Bullfighting Prize

The bullfighter Curro Vazquez has been awarded the National Bullfighting Award 2025convened by the Senate, autonomous communities and the Toro de Lidia Foundation, for their performance at the Las Ventas festival on October 12. For the jury, which met in Santander, the performance of the right-hander from Jaén has made it possible for the appointment “transcended the merely artistic to become an event of cultural affirmation“.

According to the jury, Curro Vázquez’s participation in said event “not only contributed the weight of experience and teaching, but he acted as a bridge between generations, bringing younger audiences closer to a profound, classic and enduring conception of bullfighting“.

This is the second edition of the National Bullfighting Award convened by the Senate and the autonomous communities of Andalusia, Cantabria, Region of Murcia, Valencian Community, Arabón, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Melilla and the Toro de Lidia Foundation.

The promoters of the award took the initiative after the decision of the Ministry of Culture to suppress in May 2024 the National Bullfighting Award, an award given since 2013 and which was collected in its last edition in 2023 by Julián López, El Juli.

Curro Vázquez, stage name of Manuel Antonio Vázquez Ruano, will collect the award on April 27 in the Senate. The award is endowed with 30,000 euros, the same amount as the distinction awarded by the Ministry of Culture until 2023. In 2025, the award was awarded ‘ex aequo’ to director Albert Serrra for his documentary ‘Tardes de Soledad’ and to the Union of Bull Breeders of Lidia, as announced by the jury gathered on that occasion in Toledo.
