A 55-year-old British man: the New York Times claims – this is the inventor of Bitcoin

According to the investigation, which was based, among other things, on an analysis based on artificial intelligence, it is a British man named Adam Buck, 55, who for his part strongly denies and claims that these are only coincidences. The New York Times, for their part, say that they worked on the investigation for a whole year and analyzed thousands of testimonies and articles dating back decades.

The investigation reveals that the writing of the fictitious character Nakamoto, both in Bitcoin’s first policy document from 17 years ago (the “White Paper”) and in early forum posts, shows a consistent pattern of adding hyphens to compound nouns while omitting them in compound adjectives – exactly the opposite of the accepted usage in the English language. The investigation revealed that Buck matched this pattern more closely than anyone else in the database, along with other quirks such as the use of two spaces after a period and British spelling.

The investigation points to another finding: Both Buck and Satoshi Nakamoto were involved in the Cypherpunks, an anarchist group formed in the early 1990s that sought to use cryptography, the art of securing communications through code, to free individuals from government surveillance and censorship.

In this context, the investigation refers to “Hashcash”, a system for solving statistical puzzles invented by Buck. According to the investigation, Buck proposed to combine this system with another idea called b-money to form the basis of “electronic cash”. This combination did later appear in Nakamoto’s operating foundation for Bitcoin.

Also, the investigation points to an “amazing similarity” between Nakamoto and Buck in several parameters: both dealt a lot with spam mail and its solutions, both are fans of pseudonyms and both used to claim that they were better at programming than writing. Both also used the same programming language and were experts in keeping computer networks safe.

It is also noted in the investigation that there is an inverse correlation between the times when each of them operated. Buck had been very active in the community for years, but fell silent just as Nakamoto began to act. He returned to address crypto publicly for the first time just six weeks after Nakamoto disappeared from cyberspace.

Evasive and inconsistent answers

Buck, now the CEO of the bitcoin infrastructure company Blockstream, is a highly respected figure in the crypto community. He has consistently denied being Satoshi, but the New York Times investigation describes his answers to questions as evasive and sometimes inconsistent. According to the report, Buck went from polite conversation to adamant denial as the scrutiny around him intensified.

Various investigations in the past claimed to have discovered the identity of the man behind the figure of Satoshi Nakamoto. Over a hundred candidates were mentioned as viable options. The mysterious founder is estimated to own about one million bitcoins, which are worth tens of billions of dollars.

Beyond the financial dimension, the question of Satoshi’s identity carries a heavy ideological weight for the Bitcoin community, which was explicitly built on the principles of decentralization and the absence of a central authority. The disclosure of a living and identifiable founder would give the project a “de facto” leader, a result that many in the community would see as contrary to the fundamental principles of the coin.
