The Lebanese government has ordered the army, police and security services to clear Beirut of weapons that are not in state control. This was preceded by massive Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets in the Lebanese capital.

“The army and security forces are ordered to immediately begin to fully establish state power in the Beirut governorate and ensure that weapons are in the hands of exclusively legitimate authorities,” Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said after the government meeting.

On April 1, it became known that the Lebanese mission notified the UN of the Lebanese government’s decision to declare Hezbollah’s military activities illegal.

The Permanent Representative of Lebanon, Ahmad Arafa, received this instruction orally from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with instructions to notify the UN leadership. He also conveyed President Joseph Aoun’s call for direct negotiations with Israel.

We would like to add that on Thursday, April 9, the Prime Minister’s Office released a statement by Benjamin Netanyahu in which he spoke about the decision to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon.

“Due to repeated requests from Lebanon to begin direct negotiations with Israel, yesterday at a cabinet meeting, I ordered the immediate start of a direct negotiation process with Lebanon. The negotiations will focus on the disarmament of Hezbollah and the settlement of peaceful relations between Israel and Lebanon. Israel welcomes today’s call by the Lebanese Prime Minister for the demilitarization of Beirut,” the statement said.
