Google is launching a new feature for Gemini – and is trying to catch up to ChatGPT

The main innovation is the creation of digital “notebooks”, a sort of separate work environments by subject. Within each notebook, files, previous conversations and personalized instructions can be bundled, so that the system “remembers” the context and enables continuous work without re-entering information each time. The practical meaning is a transition from one-time use of chat to managing continuous processes.

Google describes Notebooks as “personal knowledge stores”, which are able to synchronize between different services of the company, at least in the first stage within Gemini. If the promise of deep integration with tools like Google Docs, Gmail and Drive is indeed realized, it may be a significant competitive advantage for users already operating within the Google ecosystem.

The possible uses are varied. Marketing teams can consolidate campaigns, data and brand guidelines in one place. Developers can save code snippets, API documentation, and project requirements. Students can manage course materials, essays and assignments. In all cases, the advantage is in reducing the need to re-explain the context in each conversation.

However, despite the functional improvement, it is not a technological breakthrough. In fact, this is another example of the trend that characterizes the artificial intelligence market in the last year, moving from competition for model capabilities to competition for user experience. Companies rush to adopt features from each other in order not to lose users, and sometimes the new developments are more evolution than revolution.

The move also raises questions about Google’s NotebookLM product, which was previously launched with a similar idea of ​​artificial intelligence-based information management. Currently, it is unclear how the two tools will integrate or whether they will merge in the future, a situation that may create confusion for users.

Even so, for Gemini users this is a real upgrade. The ability to work with a continuous connection makes the chat a real work tool, and not just for answering one-off questions. The big question is whether it will be enough to change the balance of power.
