The Iran war has triggered a surge in inflation in Germany that threatens to get worse. In March, inflation climbed to 2.7 percent, after 1.9 percent in February, as the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced on Friday. It is the highest value since January 2024. “Fuels and heating oil in particular have become dramatically more expensive for consumers since the beginning of the Iran war,” said Destatis President Ruth Brand.
The prices for energy products overall were 7.2 percent higher in the past month than in March 2025. This was also the first increase in energy prices compared to the same month of the previous year since December 2023. In February the price decline was 1.9 percent.
Food costs were 0.9 percent more in March than in the same month last year. A further increase is likely.
