Ministry of Energy promotes construction of new oil refinery in Negev

Energy Minister Eli Cohen is promoting a draft decision that would fundamentally change government policy regarding Israel’s oil refineries.

The current official policy is to close the Israeli refineries in Haifa and Ashdod and switch to importing fuel from abroad.

A new project from the Ministry of Energy proposes to build a new oil refinery on the Rotem plateau in the Negev, reports N12 news service.

This initiative is in line with the recommendations of the state comptroller, who in February this year recommended reconsidering the decision to close the refinery.

According to the project, a “hybrid” refinery will be built on the Rotem plateau, in an area remote from residential areas near Dimona, capable of producing both traditional and “green” fuel in the future.
