In Ardèche, it still works for the last French manufacturer of shoe soles

At a time when French ready-to-wear is suffering like never before, particularly shoe manufacturers, La Semelle Moderne is resisting. This SME located in the heart of the small village of Rochepaule, at an altitude of 892 m in the Ardèche mountains of Haut-Vivarais, is a French exception. It is the last to produce shoe outsoles on a large scale for ready-to-wear brands. 700,000 pairs leave the factory each year, which has remained “in its original state” for more than 60 years.

At the beginning of April, the sun lights up the beige facade of the vast 3,000 m2 workshop, the silhouette of which is revealed as soon as you enter the village. Since 1958, the company’s activity has provided a living for families in Rochepaule, a town with just over 230 inhabitants. The modern sole first had its first life in Romans-sur-Isère, the historic capital of footwear, before settling in the north of Ardèche. In its heyday, it had up to 80 employees.
