Pedro Sánchez calls on the European Union to act before Israel: “Let us not allow a new Gaza in Lebanon”

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez urged again this Friday the members of the European Union (EU) to suspend the association agreement with Israel in the face of the “flagrant” violations of international humanitarian law that it is committing: “Let us not allow a new Gaza in Lebanon”argument.

And Spain, he added, is a “model of success” that would never have been possible without that European umbrella and that has shown, for example, that it is possible to grow and create stable employment while protecting the environment.

The objective must be a “more integrated and more sovereign” Europe, he stressed, less dependent on third parties and with its own voice: “Our autonomy is not an option, it is an indispensable condition for our political, economic and also social survival.”

And along this path, Sánchez insisted on two inalienable principles: remaining open to the world, which implies, in his opinion, strengthening commercial ties, from the United States to China, and betting on legal, safe and orderly immigration. And firmly defend international law and a rules-based global order.

According to Sánchez, Europe is “trust, predictability and stability” in an uncertain world. As trade barriers grow, he explained, the EU must remain open; and when global solidarity recedes, it has to “rearm itself morally” to contribute to peace.
