Shooting in a school in Türkiye: at least four dead and twenty injured

A killing took place this Wednesday in a school in Türkiye. At least four people were killed and twenty injured by shooting at a primary school in Kahramanmaras province in southern Turkey, according to local media, citing the local governor.

Images broadcast by the private press agency IHA show a person, body and face covered, evacuated in an ambulance as well as parents of students in tears near the establishment.

“Unfortunately, we regret four deaths. Among the victims are a teacher and three students. We also have twenty injured,” said the governor, Mükerrem Ünlüer. “A student arrived at school with weapons, presumably those of his father, in his backpack. He entered two classrooms and opened fire randomly. » He specified that the teenager, son of a former police officer aged around 13 to 14 years old, died.

Tens of millions of firearms in circulation

The two classes targeted welcomed students aged around ten, said the governor, adding that four of the injured are in serious condition. “An investigation has been opened by the Kahramanmaras Republic Prosecutor’s Office regarding the armed attack,” said Justice Minister Akin Gürlek.

On Tuesday, a teenager armed with a shotgun had already injured sixteen people in a technical high school in the Turkish province of Sanliurfa, in the southeast of the country. Ten students and four teachers were among the victims. This type of incident is usually rare in Turkey where, according to estimates by a local foundation, tens of millions of firearms are in circulation, most of them illegally.
