A high-profile Pakistani delegation arrived in Tehran on a mediation mission.

A Pakistani delegation led by the commander of the armed forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in Iran. She was met at Tehran airport by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

On the agenda of the visit is the preparation of a new round of negotiations between Iran and the United States, designed to achieve a permanent settlement. According to Iranian media, a Pakistani mediator delivered a message from the American leadership to Tehran.

The Tasnim agency associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reports that a decision on a new round of negotiations will be made following Munir’s visit. According to the statement, agreement by the United States and Israel to a truce in Lebanon would be a positive signal promoting dialogue.

Negotiations that took place a few days ago in Islamabad between US Vice President L.D. Vance and Chairman of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, which lasted 21 hours, ended without result. The parties failed to overcome differences on the issue of Iran’s enrichment of uranium and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

On April 13, Araqchi said that the parties were close to a settlement. “These were the most intensive negotiations in five decades, and the parties demonstrated goodwill. But when we were one step away from an agreement, the United States showed maximalism, changed the rules of the game and introduced a blockade,” he said.

On April 14, US President Donald Trump, in an interview with The New York Times, said that negotiations with Iran could resume in the coming days in Pakistan. Reuters previously reported that the US and Iranian delegations could return to Islamabad later this week.
