Age verification is being introduced for PlayStation players in the UK

Compliance with the Internet Security Act

This measure is a direct consequence of the entry into force of parts of the Internet Security Act, which aims to create a safer online environment, especially for minors. Users who do not complete the verification process will lose access to a number of social functions.

“Starting in June 2026, if you have not completed age verification, you will be able to continue playing on PlayStation, but some features will not be available until you verify your age,” Sony said in a notice to users.

Restrictions will also apply to the ability to broadcast and share gameplay content on platforms such as YouTube or Twitch directly from the PlayStation console. Although the deadline will only come into force in two years, Sony is moreć enabled users to check their age in advance to avoid losing access to functions.

How the check works

To implement age verification in the UK and Ireland, Sony has partnered with Yoti. Users can verify their age in several ways, including using a mobile phone number, scanning their face to estimate their age, or attaching a valid ID such as a driver’s license or passport.

This move follows the example of Microsoft, which introduced a similar system for Xbox users last year, also in cooperation with Yoti. Xbox players must be over 18 years of age to retain full access to social features such as voice and text communication and game invitations. The introduction of these measures is part of a wider trend in which technology giants are adapting their operations to new regulatory requirements.
