No extra charge: this is what the new stretch areas will look like in flight

The Australian airline Qantas is preparing to redesign the flight experience for long-haul flights, with the introduction of dedicated “Wellbeing Zones” that will be placed on 12 of its future aircraft. The initiative, which is expected to launch in 2027, comes at the same time as similar innovations in the field of comfort, led by the “sleeping compartments” recently unveiled by Air New Zealand, and marks a wider change in the way airlines perceive passenger health.

The new areas are part of Qantas’ ambitious Project Sunrise project, and will be installed on the company’s new Airbus A350-1000ULR fleet. These planes are expected to operate some of the longest direct routes in the world, including Sydney-London and Sydney-New York. These flights, which last well over 18 hours, forced the airlines to deal with the physical and psychological cost of the prolonged immobility in the air.

The welfare area was designed as a common space located between the premium-economy class and the tourist class, and it will be accessible to all passengers at no extra charge. Unlike concepts that focus on luxury, the concept here focuses on a much more basic need: space for movement.

Inside the complex, passengers will find a designed area and built-in grab handles that help perform stretches, alongside huge screens that will offer movement exercises guided by digital instructors. Ambient lighting and acoustic planning are designed to create a calm environment that is different from the rest of the passenger cabin, thus encouraging travelers to get up from their seats and “reboot” during the journey. A self-service refreshment station will offer snacks and beverages, reinforcing the area’s overall emphasis on physical health.

The concept is based on research conducted in collaboration with the Charles Perkins Center at the University of Sydney. According to Qantas, clinical studies have found that the urge to move during long flights is not just a matter of comfort, but an actual physiological and psychological need. Encouraging regular movement may help reduce jet lag and lower the risk of in-flight health problems, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). By establishing a dedicated space for activity, the airline actually redefines traffic as an integral part of the long-haul flight, and not as an inconvenience to be put up with.

The presentation of the welfare zones highlights the growing gap in the airlines’ approach to passenger comfort. While Air New Zealand has chosen to focus on rest through pods for economy class passengers, Qantas prioritizes mobility and active well-being. This distinction reflects different interpretations of the same problem: how to make extremely long flights more tolerable. For Qantas, the answer lies not just in better seats, but in giving passengers permission, and space, to leave them.

The wellness area is just one element of a comprehensive design planned for the A350 fleet. The first class suites will include closed cells with separate beds, with the aim of recreating the experience of a boutique hotel. Business Class will feature sliding doors for increased privacy, while Premium Economy and Economy Class passengers will benefit from gradual improvements in ergonomics and seat spacing.

The first aircraft is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026, with the full deployment spread over the next decade, as Qantas gradually replaces its older aircraft serving on long-haul routes. If the Qantas experiment is successful, it may set a new standard for long-haul flights, making traffic itself a core feature of the journey rather than an afterthought.
