The struggle goes up a notch: “The government is collaborating with genocide”

A series of clashes and huge demonstrations that hit Dublin over the past week reveal a deep rift in Ireland’s foreign and domestic policy. At the center of the crisis, and not for the first time, is a legal and public dispute over the renaming of Herzog Park in the Rathgar neighborhood, which has become a scene of conflict between left-wing activists and the local Jewish community, at the same time as nationwide protests against Ireland’s security cooperation with the US and Israel.

Events came to a head yesterday when the Irish Sport for Palestine (ISP) group attempted to hold an “awareness” football match at the park’s pitches. The event was met with a determined counter-demonstration led by the former Minister of Justice, Alan Shatter, and a group of residents from the Jewish community. The protesters, who carried Israeli flags, prevented the start of the games on the grounds that it was an “anti-Semitic political provocation” directed against the local community, especially in light of the park’s proximity to the Stratford Jewish School: “They are determined to mark and intimidate our small Jewish community in one of the smallest parks in Dublin, in the heart of the community and near the only Jewish school in the country,” Shatter said. The name of Herzog Park was chosen in 1995 and is named after Haim Herzog, the sixth president of the State of Israel, who was born in Belfast and grew up in Dublin. However, since the end of 2025, left-wing activists in the city council have been promoting proposals to change the name of the park to “Hind Rajab Park”, a 6-year-old Palestinian girl from Gaza, whose death story in January 2024 caused worldwide echoes after she was recorded trapped in a car under fire and begging for help on the phone for hours, until she was found lifeless. “We feel that the name of the park does not represent a history that we should perpetuate, due to the history of the name itself,” said ISP spokeswoman Rebecca O’Keefe.

The proposal provoked strong anti-reactions and was canceled last December due to “administrative failures and lack of legal authority” of the municipality to bypass a residents’ referendum. The crisis led the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ray McAdam, to issue on April 14 an official apology to the Jewish community for the “heartbreak and poor handling” of the case, a move described by political commentators as a desperate attempt by the city’s leadership to calm the spirits before the events got out of control.

However, the dispute over the park is only part of a much wider picture of civil unrest. Last Saturday, a huge demonstration was held in the “Garden of Remembrance” in the center of Dublin, where thousands of demonstrators called on the Irish government to defend the country’s neutrality policy. In Dublin City Council, left-wing politicians continue to try and find workarounds to update public site names, while seeking legal clarification from Housing Minister James Brown. Last March 26, the commemoration and naming committee met to discuss the possibility of giving the local authorities new powers to make such changes without the need for a vote of all the residents of the neighborhood, as in the case of Herzog Park. Critics of the move claim that it is an attempt to “import” the conflict in the Middle East into the quiet neighborhoods of Dublin and impose a one-sided political narrative on the public sphere.

These tensions directly affect the sense of security of the Jewish community in Ireland. Sources in the community have expressed concern that the struggle over Herzog Park has become a platform for anti-Semitic expressions, and that the focus on sites related to Jewish heritage indicates a dangerous trend. On the other hand, pro-Palestinian advocacy groups claim that this is a moral struggle over historical memory and that Ireland should take a clear stance against Israel’s actions. As of today, Ireland is at a crossroads, and the municipal debate on Herzog Park alongside the national debate on neutrality are actually two sides of the same coin.
