The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy reported intercepting two container ships, MSC Francesca and Epaminondas, in the Strait of Hormuz and forcibly transferring them to Iranian territorial waters. The IRGC states that the reason for their detention was “violations of passage rules, disabling navigation systems and posing a threat to maritime security.” The IRGC claims that MSC Francesca “belongs to the Israeli regime,” Press TV reports.
However, according to international ship registries, MSC Francesca flies the Panama flag, is owned by the Swiss company MSC Mediterranean Shipping, and is operated by the Cypriot MSC Shipmanagement Ltd. The second vessel, Epaminondas, is registered under the Liberian flag, owned by Kalmar Maritime LLC and operated by Conchart Commercial Inc. None of the vessels are formally registered with Israeli structures. However, MSC has a subsidiary in Israel, MSC (Israel) Ltd, with offices in Haifa, Ashdod and Tel Aviv. Pro-Iranian forces have repeatedly used this expansive interpretation, declaring “Israeli” ships of companies doing business with Israel, regardless of their actual registration and flag.
The IRGC warned that any attempts to violate Iran’s transit rules through the Strait of Hormuz would be dealt with “strong and lawful measures.” Both vessels turned off their AIS transponders while attempting to pass through the strait on April 18, according to NBC News.
