A tourist was detained in Florence for trying to climb onto the statue of Neptune and touch his genitals.

In Florence, a tourist was charged after she, according to police, climbed onto a massive marble statue of Neptune for a bet – she needed to touch the intimate part of the sculpture, writes The Guardian. According to experts, as a result of the incident, the Neptune Fountain suffered damage worth several thousand euros.

This monument was created by the sculptor Bartolomeo Ammanati, commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici in 1559 in honor of the wedding of his son. The composition includes the figure of Neptune and a chariot with horses at his foot.

The 28-year-old woman was noticed by police and quickly removed from the monument. She explained that she acted at the request of friends. An examination of the statue showed that elements of the sculpture were damaged – in particular, horse figures and a decorative frieze. The damage was estimated at approximately 5,000 euros, after which she was charged with damaging a cultural heritage site. This is not the first time such cases have occurred in Florence: tourists regularly try to climb historical monuments for photos or entertainment, despite enhanced control measures.
