Former Bundesliga goalkeeper Marwin Hitz is ending his active career at FC Basel after this season. “After many incredibly beautiful, instructive, great and sometimes hard years in professional football, I have decided to end my active career in the summer,” said the 38-year-old in a statement distributed by FC Basel. Hitz played for VfL Wolfsburg, FC Augsburg and Borussia Dortmund, among others.
Hitz had already announced at the end of January that he would be leaving the Swiss champions at the end of this season. At that time, the regular goalkeeper, who has been playing for Basel since 2022, left it open as to what would happen next with his career. Hitz was in goal 181 times in the Bundesliga and was allowed to score seven times in the Champions League.
German champion with Wolfsburg
Hitz was part of the Wolfsburg championship squad for the 2008/2009 season, but was not used under then coach Felix Magath. With BVB he won the DFB Cup in 2021. He had his best phase at FC Augsburg, for whom he played more than 150 competitive games from 2013 to 2018.
