Bear kills woman in forest: Incident in Poland triggers major operation

Warsaw (Poland) – An unfathomable tragedy took place in a forested area in southeastern Poland. A woman (58) was attacked by a bear. Her son was nearby and heard her screams. He couldn’t help her anymore. She died from her serious injuries.

The attack occurred on Thursday in the mountainous surroundings of the village of Płonna (Poland). According to emergency services, the emergency call came from the woman’s son.

This is how the fatal bear attack happened

The son was on the phone with his family when screams could be heard in the background. When the rescue workers found the 58-year-old, it was too late. The mother died on site. Armed police secured the area because… Predator could return.

Incident triggers large-scale operation

A large-scale operation then began in the Sanok district in the Bieszczady region. Fire departments and volunteer units were alerted. But the area was difficult to access, densely forested and far from houses and residents. The helpers only came to the scene on quad bikes, says senior captain Paweł Giba, press spokesman for the Sanok district fire department.

Bear attacks are so rare

According to official data from 2024, around 100 brown bears live in Poland. An estimated 80 animals live in the Bieszczady mountain region alone. The Tier Attack on humans are considered rare. The last fatal bear attack in Poland occurred in 2014, according to local media.
