“Two Kings”: The White House post that sparked outrage

The President of the United States Donald Trump has already proven that he is ready to break almost every American convention, and that he is eager to place his image on as many institutions and official documents as possible. Another example of this was received tonight (between Tuesday and Wednesday) when the US State Department announced the issuance of a new US passport that includes a large photo of Trump.

The new passport, which is issued as part of the 250th anniversary of the United States, will feature a photo of the current president on the inside of the cover against the background of the Declaration of Independence and an American flag, and below that will be his signature. On another page will appear a famous piece depicting the founding fathers signing the Declaration of Independence.

The new passports will be issued in a “limited edition”. NBC reported that the special passport will be the default at the Washington passport agency for as long as it is available, while online options or other locations will continue to use the existing design.

“As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is preparing to launch a limited number of specially designed American passports to commemorate the historic event,” a spokesman for the ministry told NBC. “These passports will include customized graphics and enhanced images, while maintaining the same security features that make the US passport one of the most secure documents in the world.”

The new passport is far from the first American asset that Trump puts his stamp on. In March, a federal committee that included only members appointed by Trump voted to approve a representative gold coin bearing his image, in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary. That same month, the US Treasury Department announced that his signature would be added to dollar bills, an unprecedented move.

As part of Trump’s breaking of conventions, the president usually plays with his presentation as a king. The White House’s official X Network account posted a photo of Trump next to Britain’s King Charles, with the caption “Two Kings.”

The picture provoked sharp criticism in the United States, which was established after a war with Great Britain and an effort to break free from a monarchical regime. In recent months, there have been several rounds of huge demonstrations against Trump, called “No Kings” – a protest against Trump’s conduct as president.

“One interesting difference between America and Britain is that the people are sovereign. We don’t have one person who is sovereign,” Congressman Joe Morrell, Democrat of New York, told Reuters. “I don’t think the president, with all due respect, understands this difference.”

It wasn’t the first time Trump played with royal imagery during his second presidential term. Among other things, in October 2025 he published a video created using artificial intelligence, in which he is seen wearing a crown and flying a fighter jet flying over “No Kings” protesters who opposed his government.
