FIGC elections, Malagò accelerates: the turning point towards the presidency and the scenarios

Today, after meeting, the players and coaches explained that they had identified in Malagò “the person capable of responding to the challenges of the present and above all of the future”, citing convergences on central themes such as economic sustainability, institutional reforms, technical-sports project, Club Italia and the development of women’s football. The race to succeed Gabriele Gravina therefore seems to be entering its decisive phase. With a broad front in favor and other steps yet to be defined, Malagò’s candidacy appears more solid today than everwaiting for the other federal components to express themselves, Serie B and Serie Cwhich could be decisive for the final verdict. For Malagò it would be enough to have the support of even just one of the other components (6% of Serie B or 12 of Serie C) to have the numbers to overcome the other candidate in the chestGiancarlo Abete, who with his Lega Dilettanti can count on 34% of the votes and who is currently intending to continue the process of collecting signatures to present his official candidacy by May 13th.

I thank them for their trust which further makes me responsible in making evaluations for the candidacy”, Malagò’s comment on the endorsement of the players and coaches. The former CONI president will have until May 13 to dissolve his reservationsbut he himself announced that a decision will be made “by the end of next week also in compliance with the meetings scheduled with the Serie B and C assemblies”.

In a note, Serie A also welcomed “the position expressed by the Footballers’ Association and the Coaches’ Association in support of Giovanni Malagò’s candidacy for the presidency of the FIGC”. “We believe it is significant that these components of the football system also share the indication already formulated by 19 clubs in the League. This convergence represents an important signal of unity and responsibility, at a time when Italian football needs vision, stability and capacity for renewal”, reads the statement from via Rosellini.
