Jon Favreau: “‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ is the movie to bring to the cinema for someone who has never seen ‘Star Wars'”

After almost seven years of absence, ‘Star Wars’ returns to theaters with ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’which will hit theaters next May 21. After three seasons, the Disney+ series starring Pedro Pascal like Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice, the adorable Grogujumps to the big screen in a film directed by the creator of fiction, Jon Favreau.

I want this to be the ‘Star Wars’ movie that you can take someone to the cinema who has never seen a Star Wars movie before.“says Favreau in an interview with Europa Press in which he hopes that ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ will work both as a reward for the veteran fan of the franchise created by George Lucas and also as a gateway for those who have never enjoyed ‘Star Wars’ on the big screen.

I want to make a movie for fans of the saga and make them feel the way ‘Star Wars’ makes them feel.presenting before them a great adventure, using all the time and resources we had, shot in IMAX… and all those things we couldn’t do before [en la serie] and that make it a very cinematic experience,” says Favreau, who also hopes that those established followers of the saga can now “to bring someone to theaters who has never seen ‘Star Wars’ there before.”

STAR WARS WAS BORN IN CINEMAS

A commitment, that of bringing young people to the theaters, which is not minor since, remembers the director of ‘Elf’, ‘Iron Man’ or ‘The Jungle Book’, the cinema was the place where “through his six films” George Lucas created this entire universe that has captivated millions of people generation after generation. “‘Star Wars’ originally comes from cinema. We were able to offer a version of that experience in the television series, but here we’re focusing on what came before“, insists.

I take my children to see old movies at the cinema.. And you can watch a movie over and over again, but when you do it with someone else, there’s something special about that,” explains the director and screenwriter enthusiastically, who compares the first experience of seeing ‘Star Wars’ in theaters with a child’s first visit to Disneyland: “I love Disneyland, but when the kids in my family are old enough to take them and you see how they enjoy it… you know that they will remember that for the rest of their lives“.

Favreau remembers that seven years ago ““Maybe there were a lot of kids who weren’t old enough to go to theaters and see ‘Star Wars’.” and insists on his desire that through the adventures of Mando and Grogu this neophyte audience will “fall in love” with the saga now in theaters and then see everything that was released in the past.”When you fall in love with something like Star Wars, you can go really deep and now it’s all there, you can watch it on streaming. So that’s part of what we’re looking for,” he says.

THE PRESSURE OF THE GREAT SAGAS

The filmmaker has assured that he has “enormously enjoyed” making this new installment of ‘Star Wars’, although he has acknowledged that “The pressure comes when the audience finally sees the movie, because if they don’t like what you do… you can’t keep doing it.”“.

Favreau has highlighted that the entire team that has worked on the project are fans of the saga and have enjoyed it a lot, stressing that “I love it when the audience connects with the film the same way we do.”“, as has happened with several episodes of the series that reached the audience with great impact.

Regarding the differences between telling the adventures of Mando and Babi Yoda for television or for film, Favreau explained that “it is something very different.” “Because when I’m sitting in a theater, not at home, with other people… you want the cinema to move and be exciting,” points out.

The director has stressed that in films the maxim of “efficiency” governs because “everything has to happen in two hours”, although on the other hand “you have all these resources and all this time to do it.” “You have this huge screen and you have all these visual effects and all these artists and animators“he points out.

Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, Jonny Coyne, Steve Blum and himself Martin Scorsese are some of the names that complete the cast of the new ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ film. the saga ‘Star Wars’ plans to release multiple films in theaters in the coming years, with almost a dozen projects in development, although the only film with an official release date is ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’a feature film that will be directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling that will arrive on May 8, 2027.
