Spain will play against Iraq in Riazor on June 4, its penultimate game before the World Cup

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has indicated this Friday that the men’s national team will play a friendly match at the Abanca-Riazor Stadium against the Iraq team on June 4, the penultimate preparatory event before heading to North America for the FIFA World Cup to be held this summer.

Rafael Louzán, president of the RFEF, and Adnan Dirjal, president of the Iraqi Federation, finalized the details of the meeting during the 76th FIFA Congress held in Vancouver (Canada). “Luis de la Fuente’s team will travel to Galicia to face the Iraqi national team,” the RFEF itself reported this Friday on its website.

“In memory, there is only one precedent between both teams: the clash in the 2009 Confederations Cup that ended in victory for Spain thanks to a goal from David Villa,” that press release alluded to a duel that the ‘Red’ won 1-0 during that tournament in South Africa.

“This will also be the seventh time that the team plays in A Coruña, where it last went in 2022 – also in a friendly match before a World Cup – to face Iceland, which it beat 5-0 to the enjoyment of a dedicated audience that packed the stands,” the RFEF recalled in its official statement.

The new commitment on A Coruña soil will be the penultimate test for the ‘Red’ before debuting in the World Cup against Cape Verde on June 15 in Atlanta. “Puebla, in Mexico, will mark the end of the preparation path by hosting the match against Peru on Monday, June 8,” the note concluded.
