In Eure-et-Loir, change of governance at the Château de Maintenon to offer new ambitions to this prestigious site

A page is turning for the Château de Maintenon. The partnership, which has transformed this jewel of Eure-et-Loir since 2005, gives way to a new model of governance. This change is not just administrative: it reflects a new economic reality for local authorities.

According to our information, the cost of management is the main reason for the disengagement of the departmental council. It must be said that the financial health of the departments is no longer that of the 2000s. Caught between falling state grants and sluggish revenues, Eure-et-Loir, like others, must now make a decision.

“Carrying alone the financial weight of a colossus like the Château de Maintenon became an impossible balancing act. It’s a cold accounting reality, but unavoidable,” confides someone close to the matter.

A metamorphosis over the last twenty years

In two decades, the Maintenon estate has radically changed in size, going from a site with a local aura to a leading tourist destination. With nearly 100,000 visitors per year, it has established itself as the leading private site in Eure-et-Loir and the second most visited monument in the department after Chartres Cathedral.

“The department has been an exceptional partner. In 20 years, we have increased the number of entries tenfold. This is a rare example of a successful public-private partnership. Without this historical boost, the castle would never have been able to experience such development,” says Maintenon.

Contrary to what this development might suggest, this is in no way a step backwards. Quite the contrary. Significant progress should be made this year to enrich the visitor experience and further strengthen the attractiveness of the site.

Opening previously inaccessible historic spaces to the public

The ambition is clear: to further open the castle to the public and fundamentally renew the tour route. A Board of Directors scheduled for a few weeks should also approve major projects, including the opening of hitherto inaccessible historic spaces.

If the department withdraws from the governance of the site, it does not completely disengage: a subsidy must be voted in order to support the transition.
