Iran sues the US before an arbitration court in The Hague for “attacking its nuclear facilities”

The Iranian authorities have filed a lawsuit against the United States on Tuesday before an arbitration court based in The Hague, Netherlands, for perpetrating “military aggression” against the country and “attacking its nuclear facilities,” in addition to “imposing economic sanctions” and “threatening to resort to force.”

Tehran has filed the lawsuit before the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, created in the Dutch city in 1981 as part of the Algiers Accords to resolve the hostage crisis, which began in 1979 but ended two years later, according to information collected by the Iranian television network IRIB.

Now, Iranian authorities point out that the United States would have violated “its international obligations” with the twelve-day offensive launched together with Israel against the country last February, a war that is currently subject to a fragile truce.

The first paragraph of those Algiers agreements shows the United States’ commitment “not to interfere, directly or indirectly, politically or militarily, in the internal affairs of Iran.” These agreements were negotiated by the Algerian Government and were signed in the capital of the North African country.

That is why Iran has asked the court to “respond for the violation of the agreements, order the United States to immediately end all interference in Iran’s internal affairs and require the United States to provide guarantees to prevent the repetition of such unlawful acts.”

In addition, it seeks full compensation for the damage caused to Iran. Under paragraph 1 of the Algiers Accords, the United States committed to refrain from any intervention, direct or indirect, political or military, in Iran’s internal affairs.
