Starmer under pressure: Streeting and Burnham agitate Labour

In February the same body blocked his candidacy in the Gorton and Denton by-elections, citing the costs of a new Greater Manchester mayoral election and the risk of losing the job to Reform. This time, however, NEC member Starmer would not stand in the way of Burnham’s return to Parliament. A significant change of line, considering that in the previous internal vote the committee had expressed a clear 8 to 1 against him.

The race for the Makerfield seat opened after Labor MP Josh Simons announced his resignation, a choice intended precisely to give Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, the chance to return to Parliament. However, the timing of the call to the polls is not expected to be short. To get to the vote you need to take a series of steps. The first is the formal process of requesting Parliament to hold a by-election for a vacant seat.

As Parliament is not sitting today, the earliest this could happen is Monday next week. Once the decree is issued, by-elections must be held within 21-27 working days, and usually take place on a Thursday. This means that if the decree were issued on Monday, by-elections could be held on Thursday 18 June at the earliest. The G7 summit in France is also scheduled for that week of June. If elections were held in that period, Keir Starmer’s domestic political difficulties and international challenges could potentially overlap.
