They confirm the development of the OpenAI cell phone: without apps, based on AI and prepared to break the market

In a market dominated by iPhone from Apple and the teams Samsung, OpenAI began to advance in a project that seeks to go beyond competing with traditional cell phones. The company led by Sam Altman works on the development of a smartphone focused entirely on artificial intelligence and with a different interface than the one that dominates the market today.

The most recent versions of the project were released by the analyst Ming-Chi Kuospecialized in the Asian technological production chain. According to its reports, OpenAI is already working together with manufacturers and strategic partners to define the technical basis of the device before presenting a final model.

Among the companies involved are Qualcomm y MediaTekwho would collaborate in the development of the processor. It also appears Luxsharea Chinese company that participates in the manufacturing of Apple products and competes with Foxconn within the technological assembly sector.

The company was founded by Wang Laichunformer director of Foxconn, and would have a key role in the design and production of the future device.

A phone designed around AI

OpenAI’s proposal does not aim to add artificial intelligence functions to a conventional cell phone. The idea is to build a device where AI is the absolute center of the user experience.

According to reports released by Kuo, the phone It would not depend on traditional applications or a system based on icons and menus. Instead, the user would interact through natural language with a AI agent capable of executing tasks directly.

The objective is for the person to be able to request specific actions (such as booking a flight, sending an email, making payments or searching for information) and let the system take care of it automatically to complete the necessary steps without having to open different apps.

That approach would involve a profound change regarding the current operation of smartphones, where each service depends on separate applications.

The interface would be organized into areas such as Home, Actions, Memory e Inboxwhile a good part of the experience would revolve around the conversational interaction.

Kuo even maintains that these types of devices could modify the current paradigm of the mobile marketreducing the importance of application stores and favoring an ecosystem focused on APIs (a set of rules that allow two software programs to communicate with each other) and AI agents capable of operating in the background.

Production, processor and calendar: what is known about the OpenAI cell phone

Although there was initially talk of massive production only for 2028, new leaks indicate that the schedule could be accelerated.

According to Kuo, OpenAI plans to begin manufacturing during the first half of 2027. Furthermore, the internal estimates mentioned in the reports speak of between 30 million units distributed between 2027 and 2028.

The chip chosen to power the device would be a custom version of a future MediaTek processor based on the line Dimensity 9600although that component has not yet been officially announced.

The system would combine local processing and cloud functions. The simplest tasks would be executed directly on the cell phone to improve response speed and reduce energy consumption, while more complex operations would resort to external servers.

Among the specifications mentioned in the leaks appear an architecture with double NPU (a type of unit specialized in artificial intelligence), memory LPDDR6 and storage UFS 5.0.

There is also talk of an image processing system designed to optimize the visual perception of the environment, in line with the idea of a device that constantly analyzes the user’s context.

According to Kuo, OpenAI considers the phone to be the ideal format to record everyday activity and build assistants capable of anticipating needs of each person.

The system could analyze location, habits, activity and preferences to offer Contextual responses in real time.

That level of integration would require a much deeper access to device hardware and sensors than what traditional mobile operating systems allow today.

The intention to control both software and hardware is reminiscent of the model that Apple developed with the iPhone, although in this case the focus would be on automation through AI.

The other AI devices explored by OpenAI

El smartphone It wouldn’t be the only project of hardware that OpenAI analyzes behind closed doors.

Various reports mention other prototypes focused on natural interaction with artificial intelligence and away from traditional screens.

Among them appears a smart pen capable of digitizing handwritten notes and recording voice messages with direct ChatGPT integration.

It also transcended the development of a portable audio accessorysimilar to headphones or an in-ear device, intended to offer hands-free access to AI using voice commands. That project would have circulated internally under the name “Sweetpea”.

For now, OpenAI has not officially presented any of these products or confirmed definitive release dates. However, leaks show that the company is already working on its own hardware ecosystem with artificial intelligence as the main axis.
