Leo XIV publishes his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, dedicated to AI

The Pope laureate in mathematics, who since taking office a year ago has demonstrated critical attention toward the benefits, risks and dangers (especially in the military field) of the Artificial intelligenceannounced that on Monday the 25th will publish his first encyclicalwhich is dedicated to the “custody of the human person in the time of Artificial Intelligence.”

The document will be presented personally that day by the pontiff. It is titled Magnificent Humanity and will be announced next Monday the 25th at 11:30 a.m. in the Synod Hall in the Vatican Palace.

The presentation will coincide with the 135th anniversary of the promulgation of the encyclical New thingsof Pope Leo XIII.

At the ceremony the speakers will be the Argentine cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandezprefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, one of the most important “ministries” of the Vatican government, and also Michael CzernyJesuit priest, prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development.

Professor Anna Rowlands, theologian and professor at Durham University in the United Kingdom, will also participate; Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic (USA) and responsible for research on the interpretability of Artificial Intelligence; and Professor Leocadie Lushombo, professor of political theology at the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University, in California.

The conclusions will be given by the Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin. The intervention and blessing of Pope Robert Francis Prevost will follow.

In the year that he has been pontiff, the Pope has had special and sometimes worried attention on Artificial Intelligence. Hence a masterful document is expected at a global level to outline the doctrine of the Church in the digital age.

In a message for Communication Day, Leo XIV warns against the risks of dehumanization and power concentrated in a few technology companies.

Furthermore, in an official decree, the pontiff adopted rigid internal, ethical and operational regulations for the use of Artificial Intelligence.
