In Malta, drivers under 30 are offered 25 thousand euros to give up driving for five years.

A program has begun in Malta under which motorists under 30 years of age can receive 25 thousand euros for the voluntary surrender of a driver’s license of all categories for a period of five years, according to the website of the country’s Ministry of Transport. 5 million euros were allocated for the implementation of the initiative. The program operates on the principle of “those who get it, get it”: payments are available to a limited number of participants.

Residents of Malta who are under 30 years of age at the time of application and who have resided in the country for at least seven years can apply. To participate, you must have a category B license issued at least one year ago. The license must not be revoked or suspended, and all mandatory fees must be paid. The total amount of compensation will be paid in installments – 5 thousand euros annually. Participants will receive the first payment after passing their driver’s license, and the remaining payments will be transferred over the next four years.

The Malta Transport Department explained that the program is aimed at reducing the number of people who own and use a driver’s license, and therefore the number of cars on the country’s roads. However, exceptions are provided for certain categories of citizens. In particular, persons entitled to use a company car with a driver, including politicians and their spouses, will not be able to participate in the program.

Restrictions also apply to civil servants and diplomats working in foreign missions, embassies and consulates. In addition, people whose occupation requires a valid driver’s license will not be able to apply. All documents must be submitted to Transport Malta offices by 30 June 2026.
