Awa Fam: “I’m ready to play in the WNBA”

The Spanish Awa Fam basketball player has assured that playing in the WNBA, the North American women’s basketball league, is “a dream come true”, and has stated that she is “ready” to play with the Seattle Storm and fight for all the “challenges” that come her way, remembering that she is “always” “thinking about the team”.

“For me it is super special. Being in the WNBA is a dream come true. And being Spanish, it is super special; seeing other teammates like Raquel Carrera or Marta Suárez here in the WNBA is great. I am very excited to be here and I am looking forward to starting and winning games,” she said at the press conference for her presentation.

The center from Santa Pola (Alicante) was chosen at number 3 in the WNBA Draft by Seattle Storm, where she arrives after winning the Endesa Women’s League with Valencia Basket. “I was very focused on my team. But I was watching the games – in Seattle – and I was always talking to my teammates,” she said.

“Flau’jae -Johnson- was always talking to me, telling me that they were looking forward to it. It was incredible. I was very focused on winning the championship with Valencia, on conserving my energy, on helping my team, but I was also thinking about Seattle,” she acknowledged. “It’s a dream. A 13 or 15-year-old girl would never have imagined being here. I’m excited because I’m fulfilling a dream,” she added.

In addition, she stated that she is “prepared to play in the WNBA.” “I have experience, I can make decisions in the last minutes. I think that is the most important thing when you play Eurobaskets or play with your team in international tournaments,” he said. “Spanish players are super competitive. We love to win games. I think part of why I am competitive is because I am a Spanish player,” she continued.

“I feel good. I’m ready to play in the WNBA. I don’t feel tired, I feel excited, I like it. I like basketball, I like the games and I like the training, I like to learn about this league and this sport. I know it’s difficult. I know there are many games, I know there are many more training sessions. I know I need to rest, but I feel prepared and these challenges are what I want,” she explained.

Furthermore, Fam is clear about his main virtue. “I’m always thinking about the team, not just about myself. Whether I have the ball in my hands or when I don’t, I think about what I need to do for my teammate to do better. If I have the ball in my hand, I’m always looking at where my teammate is or what I need to do to make that pass. I love passing the ball, and I think my main strength is thinking about the game all the time,” she said.

In another vein, the woman from Alicante confessed her predilection for A’ja Wilson, a Las Vegas Aces player. “She is my idol and I love her. She is always my model, the player from whom I try to learn things. I am waiting to play against her, because I would be playing against my idol,” he stressed.

Finally, he also spoke about his new partner, the French Dominique Malonga. “I’m looking forward to playing with Dominique Malonga, she’s a very special player. She’s improving a lot, right now she’s one of the best players in the WNBA. I think we can bring our energy together on the court and I’m very excited to play with her. I think it’s going to be great to be on the court together. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but it’s going to be good,” she concluded.
