Many Finns are now using a new tax benefit – Up to more than 400 euros for your child every month

OP Pohjola says that the increase in the gift tax limit at the beginning of this year encouraged Finns to donate shares.

The lower limit of a taxable gift rose from 5,000 euros to 7,500 euros at the turn of last year. Now it is possible to receive a maximum of 7,499 euros tax-free from the same gift giver over three years.

According to OP Pohjola, its data shows that the increase in the gift tax limit has caused many Finns to donate shares.

“The donation of stock exchange shares has clearly increased at the beginning of this year compared to the beginning of last year. In January, the number of donations of domestic shares approximately doubled compared to January 2025”, OP Pohjola’s director of customer relations and sales Where are you? says in the announcement.

According to OP Pohjola, the amount of stock donations has moderated since January, but it has still remained high compared to last year.

“Our customers have also made a lot of donations of around 7,500 euros, which means that many have clearly wanted to take advantage of the higher gift tax limit. This year, stock donations have been made by many people who have not made donations in recent years,” says Kalajainen.

OP Pohjola’s customers gave the most in the beginning of the year as a gift of shares Nordic, Wärtsilä, Metson, UPM-Kymmene and Shampoo shares.

According to OP Pohjola, many donate investments to their own children.

From April 2025 to April 2026, the number of investor-clients aged 0-17 increased by 23 percent in OP Pohjola.

“Many people invest in funds for their children every month. Within the framework of the tax-free gift, both parents can now transfer 208 euros to the child per month.”

A parent can donate 208 euros per month to their child without worrying about gift tax, because with that amount the limit of 7,499 euros will not be exceeded in three years. From the donations of two parents, the child would thus accumulate 416 euros every month.

Kalajainen reminds that the investments and savings donated in the child’s name are the child’s property.
