Minetti case, the note from the Quirinale: "From Mattarella grace without influences"

“The competent Judicial Authority – the General Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Appeal of Milan – conducted the investigations, requested by the Presidency of the Republic and requested by the Ministry of Justice, on the alleged unfoundedness of the conditions that led to the granting of the pardon to Mrs. Minetti. The General Prosecutor’s Office, on alleged facts depicted in press reports, has ordered careful checks in every necessary direction, through the Italian police bodies and Interpol, reaching the conclusion that they do not correspond to the truth. The President of the Republicwhich had publicly asked the Ministry of Justice – which it thanks for having promptly done so – to order new investigations, has respectfully noted the conclusions of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Milan, on the basis of which there are no reasons for a re-evaluation of the clemency measure adopted, reiterating its trust in the Judiciary”. “It is recalled – for correct and authentic information – that, for over eleven years, when a request for pardon is accompanied by the favorable opinion of the competent judicial bodies, the President of the Republic has usually granted pardon, without being influenced by considerations extraneous to the humanitarian purposes of the pardon”. This is what we read in a note from the Quirinale. “For appropriate information it should be added that, for the pardon decree in question, the Quirinale did not deviate from its usual behaviour, without any unusual secrecy: in the majority of cases of granting pardons, no communication is issued by the Quirinale, due to the presence of sensitive data – illnesses, family events and relationships, involvement of children and other delicate aspects – which must duly be kept protected from forms of disclosure. To offer a precise element of evaluation, in the presidential mandate which has been ongoing for over four years, granted 42 pardons: for 12 of them there was a press release that made them known, while there was no communication for 30 cases because these involved sensitive data. The Presidency of the Republic observes compliance with the ban on their dissemination”, concludes the press release.
