IDF on the death of a UNIFIL peacekeeper in Lebanon: the mortar attack was carried out by Hezbollah militants

The IDF said a mortar attack on a UNIFIL position in southern Lebanon that killed a UN mission soldier and wounded two others was carried out by Hezbollah militants.

Earlier, UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon reported that on the night of June 4, their position in the Marjayoun area came under mortar fire. UNIFIL said it has begun an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. At that time there was no information about the nationality of the dead and wounded, as well as from which direction the fire came.

The IDF said in a statement that several launches were recorded from the al-Qatrani area during the night. According to the army press service, mortar shells fell on the territory of a UNIFIL position in the Dibin area. The IDF claims that analysis of the launch trajectory clearly indicates that the fire was fired by Hezbollah.

The Israeli army said Hezbollah’s attacks pose a threat to international forces and cause casualties among UN personnel operating in southern Lebanon.
