Man survived nearly a week on Everest without supplemental oxygen

Lama Kazi Sherpa, a member of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Association, said today that his group found Dawa Sherpa, a 52-year-old guide, near the Khumbu glacier area and evacuated him to safety. Khumbu Glacier is located at an altitude of about 5,500 m on the slopes of Mount Everest in Nepal.

Dawa went missing on May 29 in the area between Camp III and Camp IV, located at an altitude of 7,200 m and 7,900 m respectively, while returning with a Polish climber after not being able to reach the summit of Everest. Dawa’s client returned to the camp safely, it is unclear how the two got separated.

They are the last people to conquer Mount Everest before this year’s climbing season ends.

His family said he was treated for frostbite and some other complications and is recovering well. “He recognized me, could talk and was in good health. We were very happy,” said Mhendo Lhamo Sherpa, the daughter of tour guide Dawa.

According to the Nepal Mount Everest company, Mr. Dawa survived for nearly a week without food, water and oxygen. He also had to travel alone across the treacherous Khumbu glacier, which was made more difficult because the fixed ladders were removed at the end of the climbing season.

“This is truly a miracle,” the company said.

The number of people participating in conquering Mount Everest in this year’s climbing season reached a record of more than 1,000, of which 5 climbers and guides died. In April, a huge block of ice delayed the opening of the world’s highest mountain peak, leaving many stranded at the starting camp.
