Meet Scout: Microsoft’s AI colleague who never sleeps and has read all your emails

Satya Nadella summed it up like this: ‘with Copilot we gave every employee an AI assistant, and with Scout every organization gets an AI colleague who understands the context and never sleeps’.

How does it actually work?

Scout is built on two technical foundations. The first is OpenClaw, a new agent framework that enables AI to plan and execute tasks across multiple applications – Teams, Outlook, SharePoint – without leaving the Microsoft ecosystem. The second is Work IQ, a layer that maps relationships between people, documents, meetings and projects within an organization. In short: Scout knows who works with whom, on what and why.

In practice, it looks something like this – you arrive at work in the morning, and Scout is older. prepared a summary of everything that happened while you slept, a draft response to urgent emails and a reminder that you forgot to close a task from last week.

IT departments are not thrilled

As soon as the announcement came out, the administrators started asking uncomfortable questions. An agent that has constant access to emails, files and conversations in real time opens up serious security and regulatory compliance issues. Microsoft claims they meant it – all of Scout’s actions are recorded in an audit trail, integrated with Microsoft’s Purview for data classification. Administrators can precisely set what Scout can and cannot do – it can send emails, but not send them without approval, it can access certain files, but not download them to untrusted devices.

One of Microsoft’s executives described Scout as an employee with a very narrow job description – not general intelligence. Which, if nothing else, is an interesting way to describe the software you plan to give access to all your business communications.

Wider availability is planned for the fall, and by August 2026, Microsoft promises complete documentation for administrators.
