Fernando Alonso: “It will probably be my last race in Barcelona in Formula 1”

The Spanish Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) revealed this Thursday that this weekend will “probably” be his “last race in Barcelona”, since the Formula 1 Grand Prix that hosts the Montmeló track will rotate with Spa-Francorchamps starting in 2027.

“I will try to enjoy the weekend. I will not be competitive and I will not spend much time in the car during qualifying; in the race, I hope so, but not at the pace that we all want. I want everyone to continue enjoying the weekend,” the Asturian assessed about the GP in Montmeló in the official press conference.

Alonso acknowledged that going to Barcelona “is always a celebration.” “I think this is my 23rd Grand Prix (here) and they have all been magical. This last one has to be too,” said the 44-year-old driver in an enigmatic response.

And Barcelona, ​​from next year, will rotate on the calendar with Spa-Francorchamps, so it will host races in 2028, 2030 and 2032. Thus, the Asturian hinted at a possible retirement once the 2027 season ends. “I have nothing in mind. After the summer I will make the decision whether to continue or not,” he commented.

“Obviously, Barcelona won’t be held next year, so if I don’t know what I’ll do next year, it’s almost impossible to be sure what I’ll do in two years. Every race I go to this year could potentially be my last. Here in Barcelona there is a little more of that possibility, as it won’t be held next year,” he warned.

For this reason, Alonso expressed that it will be “a special weekend.” “It’s probably my last race in Barcelona in Formula 1, so I want to thank everyone,” said the Aston Martin driver.

Fernando Alonso has scored only one point in the first six races – it was in the most recent one, in Canada – and his contract with the British team would end at the end of this season and it is unknown what his future will be.
