A family with four members needed 1,498,741 pesos to not be poor in May 2026according to data revealed this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC). In addition, the agency reported that this family group, made up of a couple and two children, specified 681.246 pesos so as not to be considered destitute.
In the report released this afternoon, Indec also indicated that inflation was 2.1 percentcompared to the previous month.
In its report on the basic food basket (CBA) and total, the organization also indicated that the monthly variation of the CBA was 2.4 percentwhile that of the total reached 2 percent.

According to these calculations, the baskets registered a interannual variation of 36.2 percent in the basic and 34.9 percent in the total.
The previous month, The Basic Food Basket (CBA) measured by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) had risen 1.1%, when inflation was 2.6%. Meanwhile, the Total Basic Basket (CBT) – which is extended to essential non-food goods and services – had risen 2.5%.
In that way, in April, A family with four members needed 1,469,768 pesos to not be poor and that same family group, made up of a couple and two boys, needed 665,053 pesos to not be considered indigent.
That month, inflation was 2.6%, consolidating a slowdown compared to March, when the index had climbed to 3.4%. The data also marked the first decline after 10 months of growth. It should be remembered that in both January and February, the CPI had been at 2.9%.
Regarding the items with the largest increases during April, Transportation led the increases with an increase of 4.4% as a result of adjustments in bus, train and subway fares. Behind were Education (4.2%) and Communication (4.1%). The Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels category was also among those with the greatest increase with a 3.5% increase, above the general average.
In the City of Buenos Aireson Tuesday the data for the fifth month of the basic basket was released, which indicated that a family made up of four people needed a monthly income of between 2,450,044.54 pesos and 7,840,142.51 pesos in May to be considered middle class in the district. The calculation corresponds to a household made up of two adults aged 35 years, economically active and owners, with two children between 9 and 6 years old.
