Instagram reinforces notifications about searches that insist on self-harm or suicide

Meta has reinforced adolescent accounts with new parental controls and new functions powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) that are responsible, among other things, for notifying parents if they detect searches that insist on sensitive topics, such as abuse.

This is reinforced with systems for age detection. Meta now has AI-powered features that identify minor accounts and primarily relies on context analysis (such as mentions of birthday parties). This technology will be deployed on Instagram Reels, Instagram Live and Facebook Groups.

It will also use visual analysis, which is responsible for scanning photos and videos to find clues about the user’s age. Here Meta makes a distinction to avoid misunderstandings: it is not a facial recognition tool, but rather a visual analysis of elements such as the user’s height or bone structure.

By combining both AI-powered technologies, the company claims it can “significantly” increase the number of underage accounts it identifies and deletes.

Likewise, Instagram will now be responsible for notifying parents if they identify repeated searches in a short period of time related to self-harm or suicide. This feature is available in the European Union.

Finally, Meta offers centralized management for parents or guardians with Family Center, a space that centralizes the administration of their children’s activity on Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook and Messenger.

You must access familycenter.meta.com/supervision to activate it, and in the following months it will be updated with more news to expand the vision of adolescent activity in the aforementioned applications.
