Hours before the expected signing of the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran in Switzerland, criticism is spreading against the agreements reached within Trump’s Republican Party
Only two days after the details of the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran were revealed, opposition to it is growing among senior members of the Republican Party. More and more Republican lawmakers, including those who are generally considered loyal supporters of President Donald Trump, are questioning the agreement and warning against its consequences.
It was reported on the CNN network that some senators were so surprised by the details published about the agreement, that at first they avoided referring to it publicly. However, within less than 24 hours, the pockets of opposition to the agreements that the American administration made with the regime in Tehran began to be woven.
Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana summed up his position in a sharp sentence: “Iran remains stronger, and we remain weaker.” Cassidy also criticized the emerging agreement last month, when he received insults from the president who called him “a weak and ineffective man”. Senator John Cornyn of Texas added: “Everything I’ve heard so far worries me.”
Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska also cast doubt on the memorandum of understanding. “It is hard to say that this is an agreement that leaves Iran in a worse place and the United States in a better place,” she said. She claimed that “a lot of money was invested, lives were lost – and yet Iran looks almost as if it has returned to the same point it was before.”
Behind the scenes, according to one Republican senator who was quoted anonymously, there is a “high level of desperation” in the party. The same source also estimated that the chances of reaching a final agreement are low, because according to him it is not at all certain that Iran will ultimately agree to the final terms.
The leader of the Republican majority in the Senate, John Thune, was also initially cautious about honoring the president and said that he was still “digesting” the details of the agreement. He later stated that this is a “step in the right direction”, but emphasized that this is only the first step and that it must be ensured that all the economic incentives that will be granted to Iran will be conditional on its conduct, especially with regard to the nuclear issue.
One of the most prominent voices against the agreement is Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi, chairman of the Armed Services Committee. After a long silence, Wicker issued a scathing statement in which he attacked the agreement and criticized the reparations fund and the intention to lift sanctions from Iran.
“I am concerned that the memorandum of understanding gives up the achievements of the military operation in ways that are not at all consistent with the president’s goals,” he wrote. According to him, the planned $300 billion fund makes the benefits Iran received under the 2015 nuclear deal a “miniscule amount” in comparison.
A similar criticism was voiced by Senator Ted Cruz, one of the most hawkish voices in the Republican Party. Cruz strongly attacked the intention to transfer funds to Iran, to release frozen assets and allow it to benefit financially from the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
“History shows that giving billions of dollars to fundamentalists who want to kill us is a particularly bad idea,” he stressed. “If we give billions to Iran, this money will be used to kill Americans. That’s why I don’t think we should do it.”
Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa, who is generally considered a supporter of an aggressive line against Iran, also sounded skeptical. “Many of us just want to fully understand what the administration is thinking and where it’s going with it,” she said. Referring to the rehabilitation fund, she added: “I need to know where this money is coming from, because I don’t think my voters will be happy if it turns out that it is American taxpayers’ money.”
The pressure on the president from home does not come only from the Republican direction. Last night, the leader of the Democrats in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, scolded the American president and made it clear that his party would not “help” Trump “send $300 billion to Iran”. Schumer explained: “The United States is in a bad situation because of Trump’s incompetence and ego. If he wants to send hundreds of billions to Iran, he will have to settle for Republican votes.”
In recent days, the White House tried to calm the spirits and explain to the lawmakers about the framework agreement reached with the Iranians. Just yesterday, a first briefing of senior members of Congress was held with the heads of the foreign affairs committees of the Senate and the House of Representatives, to detail the clauses of the agreement. The AP reported yesterday that Witkoff said in a briefing that Iran would allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to return to the nuclear facilities and locate the enriched uranium.
Vice President JD Vance, who became the administration’s main spokesman on the issue, tried in recent days to reduce the strength of the opposition. “To all the critics I say: put some faith in the president of the United States,” said Vance. “The idea that he would sign an agreement that harms the American people is ridiculous.” The vice president also rejected the claims of conflicting messages from the White House and said: “I don’t think our public messages are chaotic.”
But reservations are also heard among Trump’s associates. One of the former administration officials wondered why the person leading the advocacy around the agreement is Vance and not Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is considered a hawk on the Iranian issue and enjoys wide trust among Republicans in Washington. “Making Vance the face of the deal instead of Rubio will not increase Republicans’ confidence that this is a good deal,” said the former administration official.
Senator Lindsey Graham, who is considered close to Trump, also aligned himself with the administration. Graham, who is also generally seen as having a bellicose attitude towards Iran, announced: “I changed my mind, after talking with Witkoff – this agreement just opens up the Strait of Hormuz and that’s good.”
Meanwhile, Trump himself reacted angrily to criticism from within his own party. In a post he published on the Truth Social network, he attacked his opponents and wrote that those who think he was not tough enough against Iran are “either fanatics, or bad people, or stupid.”
Despite the White House’s efforts, opposition to the deal no longer seems to come only from the traditional hawkish wing of the Republican Party. As time passes since the details agreed upon with the regime in Tehran were published, the circle of Republicans who question the process is expanding – a development that could make it difficult for Trump if and when he is required to rally support for a final agreement with the Ayatollah regime.
