When Jukka Hakkarainen answered the phone two months ago, his world came crashing down.
The central organization Suomen Hippos announced that prohibited substances had been found in the doping sample of a horse at Hakkarainen stables.
It was hoped that the coach from Kuopio would not tell the public about his injury just yet. The shocking news that shook the trotting circles was revealed last Tuesday, when Hippos announced the matter that had been under investigation for a long time.
The central organization said that Oxazepam was found in the urine sample given by Callela Callmeboss of the Hakkaraisen stable at Kuopio raves on March 20. It is a benzodiazepine belonging to tranquilizers intended for humans, which also makes it easier to fall asleep.
Hakkarainen was banned from competition for three months, and he was fined 500 euros for a medication violation.
In addition, the prize of 1,000 euros earned by his protégé from the winning run in Kuopio was ordered to be returned.
Coach says that the news of the positive doping result was a complete shock to him. He has always considered himself innocent.
It has pissed off so much that it wasn’t far off that I wouldn’t have put the whistles in the bag.
“It really took a toll on me. I slept really badly at night for 1-1.5 months. I was completely nauseous and during the day I thought I would fall asleep on a horse’s buggy and everywhere all the time,” says Hakkarainen.
Even a change of field was on the mind of the coach of Finland’s best skater Massimo Hoist.
“It has screwed up so much that it wasn’t far off that I wouldn’t have put the whistles in the bag. This kind of crap came over me, even though I haven’t done anything wrong.”
“Even when using anthelmintics, we add an extra day or two to the waiting period. Since we have certainly tried to be as careful as only humans can be, it has felt really bad,” Hakkarainen describes.
Encouraging comments from friends kept him going.
“We have really nice horse tellers who kicked your ass and said you will definitely not stop.”
Jukka Hakkarainen is suspended for the rest of the summer.
Hakkarainen says he has no idea how the banned drug got into Callela Callmeboss. The coaching team has given Hippos their own explanation and is still trying to find answers.
“The substance could have come from anywhere, but probably from outside our stable. We have asked everyone who visited the stable if anyone uses such a drug, but no one has said that they do.”
Hakkarainen’s competition ban is valid from June 23 to September 22. During that time, the responsible coach of the stable acts as his spouse Riina Korhonen.
Hakkarainen can train the stable’s horses at home and drive them to competitions with a transport truck, but he must not stay in the pit area during the trot.
Medicine cart is not the only setback for Hakkarainen this year. The first season of Massimo Hoist, coached by him, has gone badly below expectations.
The stallion won his first races of the spring impressively, but started to get sick after that. It was far from its best in the spring international major competitions in Seinäjoki Race and Finlandia race.
The ill Massimo Hoist will return to the race tracks in two weeks.
After that, Massimo Hoist had to miss Europe’s toughest sprint race, Elitloppet in Stockholm.
“The horse got sick around Seinäjoki, because its blood values started to drop. After Finlandia, its iron values immediately dropped.”
Now the star crab is feeling good again. It is on fire in two weeks in the Suur-Hollola race, which it won last summer.
“At least based on the training, Massimo Hoist’s situation looks good. I rode it a week ago in a brisker 1.15-speed 2,000-meter hill, which it passed easily.”
Many expect to see the stallion after Suur-Hollola in the St. Michel race, but Hakkarainen is hesitant.
“Mikkel’s competition still needs to be thought about after Suur-Hollola. There are also suitable starts for stallions born in Finland, such as the Finnish Championship and the St. Leger, and the most important thing is to try to keep it in good shape for the rest of the season.”
