US lifts export controls on powerful AI models

The ban was introduced in mid-June at the initiative of the US Department of Commerce. The reason was concerns that the models could pose a threat to national security due to the possibility of their use in cyber attacks and other malicious purposes. Then Anthropic was forced to disable access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 because it could not quickly determine the citizenship of users.

Later, American authorities allowed the use of Mythos 5 to a limited number of verified organizations in the United States, and now they have completely lifted export restrictions. According to US media, this happened after Anthropic, together with the government, strengthened security measures and took additional steps to reduce potential risks.

The situation reflects Washington’s increasing focus on controlling the most advanced AI technologies. Similar requirements previously affected OpenAI, which had to limit the distribution of its new GPT-5.6 model at the request of the American authorities. At the same time, the head of OpenAI, Sam Altman, noted that he considers it necessary to test the safety of AI, but does not support the practice in which the state determines who can gain access to new developments.
