After more than a decade together: the “Friends” star and her partner broke up

“Friends” star Courteney Cox (62) and her partner of the past 13 years – not including crises and breakups, “Snow Patrol” band member Johnny McDade (49), have separated. This is what is being reported overseas now.

The two, who started dating at the end of 2013, after meeting at a busy party that Cox threw at her house, were last seen together in public when they watched the United States Tennis Championships in September 2025. Before that, in July, Cox marked McDade’s 48th birthday in an emotional tribute post in which she wrote to him, among other things: “I love you always.”

The former couple, who got engaged nine months after they met, called off their engagement at the end of 2015 – but returned to each other’s arms a year later, without getting engaged again.

In April 2024, the actress said that she and McDade broke up for the first time during couples therapy. “Almost three years into the relationship we broke up, and it was very powerful. I didn’t see it coming, whether I was supposed to or not,” she told the podcast at the time Minnie Questions with Minnie Driver. “He just broke up with me in the first minute. I was shocked. We were engaged, and it hurt me so much. He didn’t try to surprise me. He just had such a hard time in the relationship,” she continued. “There were so many things he had to deal with that he felt he had to protect his heart.”

At the same time, Cox emphasized at the time that the breakup taught her to “reclaim” her voice and her personal boundaries, adding that she was “grateful for that breakup”, which changed them for the better later, according to her. “It really taught me how to behave in the world,” she said then. “Which things from my childhood still affected me? For example, the need to be adored by men, or things I didn’t know how to let go of in order to be in a relationship. I learned not to take things personally, to set boundaries. I pulled myself together, and I had a great therapist.”
