The Spanish tennis player Alejandro Davidovich entered this Friday into the round of 16 of Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season and which is played on grass, after convincingly beating the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in three sets (7-6(3), 6-2, 6-3), while the Madrid player Rafa Jódar and the Galician Jessica Bouzas would be eliminated after losing to the Japanese Shintaro Mochizuki (1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4) and the American Jessica Pegula (6-1, 6-3), respectively.
For the first time in his career, Alejandro Davidivich reaches the round of 16 at Wimbledon. And he does so after dominating and winning decisively against the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, whom he did not allow to enter the match at any time. The man from Malaga was outstanding with his serve, which did not give way throughout the match and with which he only had to face four breaking points against him.
All of this in a match in which the first set would be the most contested. Both tennis players were solvent with their serve, although Fucsovics would have to save up to three breaking balls against him before the set was decided in the tie break. And in sudden death, Davidovich would be much superior with a resounding 7-3 in his favor that placed him with an advantage in the match.
An advantage that would only grow as the match progressed. The good level and initiative achieved with the serve in the first set would become even more evident in the second and third sets. In both, furthermore, the Spanish ‘Foki’ would have more revenue than the rest. In the second set he would break his rival’s serve up to two times (6-2), while in the third a single serve to the rest would be enough to close the match (6-3).
The negative note of the day in a Spanish key was given by Rafa Jódar and Jessica Bouzas. The tennis player from Madrid could not overcome the Japanese Shintaro Mochizuki in the third round, number 151 in the ATP ranking and from the previous phase. Jódar was surprised by the Japanese tennis player, who was able to turn around a match that started 6-1 in favor of the Madrid native.
However, the match would change in the second round, much more disputed and which Mochizuki ended up winning. And the Spaniard’s start was unbeatable, breaking his rival’s first two serves, but his drop in level on serve meant that he could not take advantage on the scoreboard, also giving up his first two turns. In addition, both would get one more break before the set was decided in the tie break.
In sudden death, with again many concessions to service, he would end up falling on Mochizuki’s side. The Japanese would take advantage of his second opportunity to close the set with a 7-5 score. Thus, the match, which in sensations favored the Asian, was tied at one set. The errors – 18 in the second set – had led Jódar to lose confidence in his game, and that would be taken advantage of by the Japanese.
The first to unbalance the third set would be Mochizuki, who would break Jódar’s serve softly in the third game. Despite this, the Madrid native would react with a break in the sixth game to equalize the score (3-3). But, again, in the decisive section, the Japanese would be more accurate, taking two consecutive games with 4-4 on the scoreboard, and winning the set (6-4).
For the second consecutive match, Jódar was once again on the verge of elimination, but this time he would not be saved by an interruption in the match like against Pablo Carreño. The Leganés tennis player’s tennis would once again be erratic, a double break against him, in the second and fourth turns of serve, would be decisive for the Japanese to close the set, the match (6-4) and his passage to the fourth round, where he will face the Italian Jannik Sinner, who comfortably beat the American Jenson Brooksby (6-4, 6-3, 6-4).
The one who would also get a pass to the round of 16 would be the Serbian Novak Djokovic, winner of the tournament seven times, who defeated the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in four sets in his third round duel (7-5, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) in three hours and 15 minutes of play. Now, he will seek the quarterfinals against the Russian Roman Safiullin, who gave the surprise of the day by winning in three sets of the Brazilian Joao Fonseca (6-3, 6-3, 6-3).
For her part, the Galician Jessica Bouzas could not surprise in her third round duel against the number four seed of the tournament, Jessica Pegula. The American went over the top in a match in which she barely allowed the Spanish to add four games. Thus, Pegula’s victory would be very convincing (6-1, 6-3) in less than an hour of the match.
The number one in the world and top favorite to win the title, the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, also advanced to the round of 16, winning in two sets in a disputed match against the Latvian Jalena Ostapenko, whom she won by a double 6-4.
