With the first half of the year concluded, local production continues in the process of adaptation, driven by the renewal of supply and the maturation of projects linked to new investments. In this regard, Rodrigo Pérez Graziano, president of the Association of Automotive Factories (ADEFA), said: “The local industry is operating with slower recovery times with respect to demand”.

The key to the fall in production must be traced to the line dedicated to the domestic market.

With stagnant exports (the year-on-year drop was 2.1%), the difference was the “sale to national vehicle dealers.” In this segment, with a decline of 34,2% in June that turns into a landslide 39,6% In the first half of the year, the impact of the 100,000 cars of Chinese origin that entered without tariffs during the first months of the year can be seen in numbers, which affected the drop in sales in the dealerships of the so-called “generalist brands”, which are precisely those grouped in ADEFA.

Regarding the external front, the manager highlighted “the reduction of export duties published by the National Government in the Official Gazette as it is a fundamental signal to improve the competitiveness of the automotive industry” and stressed that “It is necessary to support provinces and municipalities in reducing the tax burden to overcome the structural challenges that allow us to consolidate sustainable volumes over time.”

Likewise, he highlighted the 22.5% rebound in wholesale sales compared to May, which confirms that domestic demand shows signs of activation. “However, the semiannual volume remains in contractionary territory (-23.7%), estimating a recovery in the second semester depending mainly from the financing conditions”, concluded Pérez Graziano.
