US experts on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s marriage plans: “This wedding is also politically significant”

For the New York Times, it is “one of the biggest events of the summer” and something like the American version of a royal wedding. Now there are increasing signs that pop star Taylor Swift and football star Travis Kelce want to get married next week – on the weekend around the symbolic Fourth of July, the US Independence Day.

“New details point to a multi-day event at Madison Square Garden, which Taylor Swift is said to have rented, according to an entertainment executive,” the US newspaper reported on Thursday. A team of five reporters from the New York Times researched the article. The article was one of the top stories on the newspaper’s website Thursday morning.

Because this wedding is not just about the private happiness of a prominent couple who got engaged last August. The topic also has enormous cultural and social significance in the USA.

With two big stars who also combine two extremely popular areas such as music and sport and thus bring together large fan cultures, the public’s interest is of course very high.

“First of all, such a celebrity wedding of the most successful singer of all time and a Super Bowl winner is a major media event,” says Daniel Stein, professor of North American literary and cultural history and dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Siegen, to the Tagesspiegel. “There is a lot of speculation: where and when exactly will the wedding take place, who will be invited, what is planned?”

With two big stars who combine two extremely popular areas such as music and sport and thus bring together large fan cultures, the public’s interest is of course very great. “The event also comes at an extremely hyperactive time in the media: the world is already looking to the USA because of the World Cup, and the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence are also attracting global attention.”

The great public attention on the topic “is primarily explained by Taylor Swift’s great popularity, which is also based on songs about failed relationships,” adds USA expert Thomas Greven, associate professor of political science at the Free University of Berlin. “You take part in their happiness, so to speak.”

There are no royal weddings in America, but the connection between arguably the biggest pop star in the world and the three-time Super Bowl winner comes very close.

„New York Times“

The “New York Times” summarizes the phenomenon as follows: “There are no royal weddings in America, but the connection between probably the biggest pop star in the world and the three-time Super Bowl winner comes very close.”

  • According to the newspaper’s research, a small celebration is planned for July 2nd at Madison Square Garden with around 100 guests.
  • The next day, July 3, around 1,000 guests will gather at the multi-purpose arena in Manhattan, according to insiders, for a more elaborate celebration that may also include stage performances.

According to the New York Times, the preparations also extend beyond the arena: “A request has been made to the city of New York to close the streets around Madison Square Garden for the events from July 2 to noon on July 4, according to three people familiar with the matter.”

Several members of Travis Kelce’s football team, the Kansas City Chiefs, have booked hotel rooms at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square around July 3, according to the newspaper. And the station police responsible for the train station below the arena were informed that a Swift wedding was to be expected on the weekend of July 4th.

This wedding is also politically important because Taylor Swift has made critical comments about Donald Trump in the past and supports the Democratic Party.

Swift and Kelce’s upcoming wedding is also so significant because it’s not just about the public celebration of an American dream couple. But also about a relationship that is relevant far beyond culture and sport, as US expert Stein explains: “Politically, this wedding is also important because Taylor Swift has made critical comments about Donald Trump in the past and supports the Democratic Party.” This earned her some derogatory and aggressive comments from the president, but did not affect her popularity.

Travis Kelce holds back from making political statements, “but American football has not been spared from political polarization in recent years, so that pop and politics collide here too.”

Trump’s star is sinking even among his most loyal supporters. Attention to such events increases.

There is now speculation in the US media about how far Taylor Swift could steal the show from US President Trump with a big wedding celebration on the July 4th weekend. He wants to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States with a “Freedom 250” initiative, the central celebrations of which are to take place in Washington, DC.

“Donald Trump’s ‘America 250’ performance could be overshadowed by his superstar nemesis,” wrote a commentator for the online newspaper Huffpost on Thursday. Swift’s possible wedding could “spectacularly overshadow his big weekend.”

“Taylor Swift is perceived as a Trump critic, even though she rarely speaks out,” says political scientist Thomas Greven. “For a long time, criticism of stars was counterproductive because they were perceived as part of the left-liberal establishment.” And the Trump camp and its “Make America Great Again” movement are all about “wiping one out” on this camp. But now Trump’s star is sinking, even among his most loyal supporters: “The attention for such events is increasing.”

The event is also interesting from a social perspective, says US expert Stein. On the one hand, because the economic situation for many people in the USA has deteriorated significantly in recent years due to high inflation. “A mega celebrity wedding can also be seen as wasteful and anti-social, although it is also possible that Swifties and football fans see the event as a welcome distraction from the overall disastrous political and social situation in the USA.”

Gender issues also come into play here, says Stein: “Taylor Swift is certainly the richer and more successful of the two, which may irritate conservative understandings of gender.” However, through his sport and his demeanor, Kelce embodies “a certain ideal of masculinity that Swift does not resist, at least in public.”
