The president of the United States, Donald Trump, considered this Thursday that Iran has accepted “practically everything” that Washington needs, while noting that talks with Tehran continue today.
“I think they have accepted practically everything we need,” Trump said in an interview with the CNBC network in which he added that both countries continue to “negotiate” at the present, after the preliminary agreement that the two parties reached on June 18 in order to achieve progress in the dialogues.
Asserting that the conflict with Iran “is not a war per se” but is about “nuclearly disarming” the Islamic Republic because, as he has insisted in line with his usual interventions, “they cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon,” the Republican magnate has boasted of having “dismantled” the Iranian Army, highlighting that, currently, “they have no Navy, no air force, no radars.”
Likewise, after noting that “all” the leaders of the Asian country “are dead”, and pointing out that he is not looking for “a change of regime” but rather that “they cannot have nuclear weapons”, the tenant of the White House has indicated that Washington gets along “well” with the current power leadership of the Islamic Republic, claiming to believe that “they are much more rational.”
Finally, questioned about the possibility of a “total blockade” by the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, the head of the North American Executive pointed out that the blockade imposed on Iranian ports – lifted after the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran on June 18 – “was not a blockade” but “a wall of steel” due to which “not a single ship managed to reach Iran.”
“They have 300% inflation, they don’t make money. So we are going to keep part of that money and we are going to buy it from them. They need food, corn, wheat and soybeans, and we are going to make it exclusively our American farmers who provide it to them. Assuming we get to the position we should get to. I think we will get it,” the president said after stating that Iran has “lost its strength and bravado.”
In relation to the aforementioned preliminary agreement, in the last week Tehran has claimed the need for the commitments established therein to be fulfilled, while the Trump Administration has insisted on meetings between Tehran and Washington in Doha, capital of Qatar.
In any case, the situation in Lebanon is currently the weakest piece of the agreement, after Israel has reiterated that it will not withdraw from the south of the country or cease its military operations against the Shiite militia party Hezbollah. All this, while Iran insists that the agreement sealed with Washington also affects Lebanon and enshrines respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
