Marine accident in Burgas: fight for the life of an Israeli boy

Three young Israelis were injured yesterday (Wednesday) in a marine accident when they flew from an inflatable “banana” device that was attached to a racing boat, the condition of one of the boys is described as very serious and the doctors are fighting for his life. The 17-year-old’s father is staying with him in the hospital in Burgas, an attempt to fly him to Israel was denied due to his medical condition. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs knows the details and the local consul is in contact with the family members.

The water sports club where the incident happened is located near the Ahloy resort. The local agency of the maritime directorate stated in a press release that the Israeli boy is hospitalized with a serious head injury, while the other two Israelis who were injured have only superficial injuries.

According to reports in the local media, the club operated without a license. The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport stated that a preliminary inspection conducted found that the person who operated the place is not qualified and does not hold the necessary documents to operate marine activities. “The facility operated contrary to the regulatory safety requirements,” the ministry noted, but emphasized that at this stage there is no information indicating that the beach concessionaire was aware of the illegal activity that took place in the area.

It was also reported that criminal proceedings will be taken against the pilot of the race boat to which the “Banana” was attached, because it was found that he does not possess the necessary documents to carry out this type of activity. In addition, the local Ministry of Transportation stated that a fine will be imposed on the franchisee and the Ministry of Tourism will be informed of the violation of the procedures.
