Public funeral service for Khamenei begins in Tehran

In the Iranian capital Tehran there are public funeral ceremonies for the supreme leader who was killed in the war Ayatollah Ali Khamenei started. Footage on state television showed the religious leader’s coffin laid out in the Großmoschee Mosalla. Numerous supporters had been flocking to the venue since dusk early on Saturday.

Khamenei’s body remains in Tehran for three days. Afterwards there are mourning ceremonies in the Pilgrim city of Qom as well as planned in Iraq. He will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad on Thursday.

Targeted killing

Khamenei was killed on February 28 in a targeted Israeli airstrike on his official residence in the Iranian capital. Israel and the US then fought for more than five weeks War against Iran. A ceasefire has been in effect since the beginning of April.

Thousands of people flocked to Mosalla on Saturday morning. Many mourners were dressed in black, some carrying red Shiite flags as a symbol of retribution. Shouts of “Death to America” and “Revenge, revenge” could be heard in the Mosalla. The Iranian authorities expect attacks in Tehran alone in the next three days 15 to 20 million participants.
