US President Donald Trump has announced that he has “given Iran a week off” from negotiations due to the funeral of the slain leader of the Islamic Republic, Ali Khamenei.
Late in the evening of July 3, during an event dedicated to the 250th anniversary of US independence, Trump said: “We defeated Iran. They are desperate to reach an agreement. We gave them a week off because of the funeral, because we are kind.”
The latest round of indirect talks between the United States and Iran took place in Doha on July 1. Reuters, referring to an Iranian official familiar with the negotiations, reported that the discussions had a technical nature.
US President Donald Trump announced that the recent meetings with Iran in Qatar went well. “Iran’s denuclearization process is going well,” the head of the White House said without further details.
Iranian authorities have organized six-day funeral ceremonies in several cities for the former supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, who was killed by Israel and the US at the end of February. However, it is not yet clear whether his son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was injured in the attack, will participate in any of these events.
