Football: Former DFB captain Marozsán ends her career

The 112-time national soccer player Dzsenifer Marozsán has ended her active career. The 34-year-old former captain of the German selection announced this on Instagram on Tuesday. Marozsán, who was born in Budapest, played a major role in the national team’s two title wins.

On the way to the 2013 European Championship triumph in Sweden, the attacking midfielder scored the decisive goal in the semi-final against the hosts. At the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, Marozsán also scored against Sweden in the final. From 2016 to 2019 she led the selection of the German Football Association (DFB) as captain and stood out with her fine technique. In March 2023, Marozsán resigned from the national team.

“It started very early. The ball was the only thing that made me happy. It was the love of the game and the happiness with my teammates,” wrote Marozsán: “Now it’s time for me to say goodbye to this beautiful sport. It was a pleasure to play for all the clubs I played for and I would like to thank each and every one of them.”

Marozsán came to Germany with her parents when she was four. She played for 1. FC Saarbrücken, 1. FFC Frankfurt and Olympique Lyon. Marozsán was most recently under contract with Al-Qadsiah WFC in Saudi Arabia. Although the playmaker was repeatedly set back by serious injuries, she won the Champions League six times with Frankfurt and Lyon, won the DFB Cup twice and won several titles in France – including the treble three times.
