La Jornada: Cuban painter and sculptor Luis Miguel Valdés passed away

The Cuban painter, sculptor and engraver Luis Miguel Valdés (Pinar del Río, 1949) died last Monday in Cuernavaca, Morelos. This was reported by the Cuban embassy in Mexico through its social networks.

Valdés, who trained at the National School of Art in Havana, was one of the most important exponents of modern plastic arts in the history of the Caribbean island. In his work he focused on using innovative tools that used technology, such as experimentation with digital, which he applied since 1985.

The artist held more than 50 exhibitions, both personal and together, that were presented in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, India, Yugoslavia and Mexico, his last place of residence, where he arrived in 1991.

Luis Miguel Valdés was also a teacher, a member of the founding faculty of the Higher Institute of Art, today the University of the Arts of Cuba, where he held the position of head of the Engraving area.

In Mexico he founded the La Siempre Habana graphics workshop, created together with the poet Cuitláhuac Rangel in 2000, the project was consolidated as a space for creation, training and exchange and a meeting point for creators from Cuba, Mexico and other countries.

Some collections that house his pieces are the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba, the José Martí National Library, the Casa de las Américas and the National Museum of Prints, among others.

“The Cuban embassy in Mexico expresses its deepest condolences to his family, friends, disciples and the entire artistic community. May the images that we share today serve to pay tribute to his life, work and extraordinary teaching,” can be read in a message published on the social network X.
